Schools throughout the East Bay and North Bay were closed due to smoky air quality. Oakland’s air quality was the second worst in the nation.
But what caused these devastating fires? It was a deadly combination of brittle-dry weather and high winds that caused so many fires to start all at once on the very same night. They caught thousands off-guard, and many Northern California families found themselves piling into their cars and fleeing the doomed area.
