School restrooms

12/8/2021

BY JASMINE H.

Feel like the restrooms at A.P. Giannini have poor quality, are small or are gross? Good or bad? Read about what others have to say about the restrooms and how to improve them.

What do you think about the bungalow restrooms at AP?

The metal that holds the toilet paper shouldn’t be there because the school should be able to afford normal toilet paper holders in the restrooms. They should be able to afford them because the school can buy us all our books and stuff, so the school should be able to buy us stuff to actually hold toilet paper in the bunglows that isn’t just metal. - Naomi C.

The floor is really dirty. The stalls are too small. - Yana

They are pretty good, except the floor has lots of mud. - Austin

They are disgusting. - Not Nile

They are gross and unsanitary. - Person in the Shadows

They are so small and not many people can do their business there. - Myles

The floor has urine everywhere. It’s like really crowded because every passing period people go in the restroom. - Han

What do you think about the school restrooms in the buildings?

I think the restrooms in the wall outside’s quality is good, but how people throw toilet paper on the ground isn’t good. - Naomi C.

They are good, but  it’s not fair that the boys restrooms are bigger than the girls restrooms. -Yana

The floors are wet! They are very wet! - Not Nile

They are even more dirty than the bungalow restroom. They need to inforce more consequences for trashing the restroom because it’s gross. - Myles

It’s just bad. People spit their gum in the urinals and throw paper towels in it. - Joaquin Duca

ASK ADA (ADVICE COLUMN)

12/8/2021

Dear Ask Ada,

One of my teachers is really strict, and I have a B in their class right now. At the end of the grading period, I really want an A, but I’m worried that the instructions aren’t clear and I’m going to keep getting B’s.

-Concerned Classmate

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Concerned Classmate,

    I understand where you’re coming from. Communication is the key to getting good grades, so if you don’t have clear instructions or a rubric to look at, then your grade will drop. You’re definitely going to want to email your teacher about that, so here are a few things you might want to include;
  1. If your teacher’s style is only a couple long and important assignments, then you’re going to need to do really well on all of them. If you already got a B on one of them, try asking for extra credit. This is a surefire way to show your teacher that you care just a little bit more than everyone else, and you also have a chance to boost your grade.
  2. This you should do anyway, but if you’re confused about something, you gotta ask the teacher for clarification about it. Don’t sit there in confusion until it’s too late - advocate for yourself! This is a great skill to learn, so that you don’t get confused by vague instructions and get points off for those mistakes. Students used to be able to just go to a teacher’s room after class or at lunch, but with pandemic restrictions you now need to plan out when and how you can get the help you need.
  3. My final tip is to ask for a rubric. This shows what you need in your essay/quiz answer/slide to get which grade. If your teacher already provided you with a rubric, go back and cross-reference it to what you’ve already done (ideally before you turn it in!). For example, if the rubric says you need two strategies of solving the math problem to get a 4, go back and add another. If you meet up to the requirements, you’ll get a good grade, fair and square.

Anyway, that pretty much sums it up. I’ve had the same problem before, so I really hope that these tips help out. They worked for me!

Native American heritage month

12/8/2021

 BY JASMINE H.

The month of November is National Native American Heritage Month, a month to commemorate Native Americans. November was officially declared Native American Heritage Month by President George H. W. Bush, in 1990. “In 1990 Congress passed and President George H. W. Bush signed into law a joint resolution designating the month of November as the first National American Indian Heritage Month (also known as Native American Indian Month),” quoted from senate.gov in the article “Celebrating National Native American Heritage Month”.

It’s important to know about Native American Heritage Month because it important to know/understand other people’s cultures & traditions and what others ancestors went through. There are many ways to celebrate or observe this month, so here are some.

  1. Learn about the Native American tribes in your area or near you
  • Search up Native American tribes in California or in the Bay Area
  1. Visit a Native American Museum or cultural center
  2. Read books about different tribes
  3. Cook authentic Native American food
  4. Make crafts that they made back then
  • “The Internet is full of ideas, from a cardboard tube totem pole to a mini wigwam made of paper. Or start at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, which presents video tutorials for a sunflower bracelet, summer strawberry, and cornhusk dragonfly,” quoted from connecticutchildrens.org.
National Native American Heritage Month is the month of November. The month is important to celebrate because it’s important to recognize others’s cultures. I hope you can celebrate this month!
